in florescence
2025, watercolour, coloured pencil
I went into the creation of this piece with a desire to play with bright colours and loose shapes. I started with a reference photo of wavy shapes in the sand on a beach, and wanted to fuse that with the essence of spring flowers.
Florescence is a state of great activity and achievement; a period of being in bloom; thriving or flourishing. Etymologically, it comes from the New Latin word flōrēscentia.
Inflorescence is a botanical term used to describe a group of flowers on a stem. There are many different types of inflorescences that are differentiated by how the flowers are arranged on the peduncle (the stem that holds the whole inflorescence), the timing/order of the flowers blooming, and how clusters of flowers are grouped within the inflorescence.
This piece is inspired by the long days of spring and summer, and the cascade of blossoms that carries us through these warmer seasons.
