I created this concept sketch for a local public art opportunity, intended to be painted on a picnic table! I wasn’t selected to participate, but I love this piece so I still wanted to share it with you all.

I have been inspired by bringing elements of one medium into my practice with another medium, finding the connections between them. This piece explores the connections between painting and quilting. For my concept sketch I designed a picnic-table-shaped quilt with several quilting techniques and motifs in mind: star-shaped blocks, checkers/alternating squares, and appliqué. The design also features a great blue heron, one of the largest birds that can be seen regularly in our region, hopefully inspiring the viewer to look for birds around them when they spend time outside. The final piece will include visible stitching details throughout, reminding the viewer of the effort and time that goes into making the art that we all love to look at and interact with.
